Happy Birthday, Barbados

A big event in the Barbadian calendar is the festivals called  ‘Crop Over’, a sort of Harvest Festival. It’s  the most significant and longest celebration of all the festivals.

Crop Over  begins in June with an opening gala and reaches its peak on the first Monday in August with the Grand Kadooment Day Parade.  In August 2016 the Museum of London, Docklands, held a festival of Barbadian culture, which  naturally included ‘Crop Over’.

2016 marks the 50th anniversary of Barbados’ Independence from UK after almost 300 years as a colony. The official date is  30th November.  The festival at the Museum of London, Docklands, picked up on that, too.

There’s a helpful article from The Telegraph newspaper here.
