You can bank on those Gibraltarians

The Finance Industry is a major part of Gibraltar’s economy.  When you pass any UK high street bank,  call to mind that it is likely to have a presence in Gibraltar too.  Barclays, Lloyds, RBS.NatWest.

Gibraltar based banks with names not familiar in UK but with a presence in London are:

1. Jskye Bank Ltd: Website here, with full history.   A big Danish bank with offices in Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, France, Switzerland [to close in 2015?]  and Gibraltar.  The London address is given as Jutland House, 10-12 Alie Street, London E1 8DE ( that’s Aldgate),

2. Bank J. Safra Sarasin (Gibraltar) LtdWebsite here.  At 47 Barclay Square, Mayfair,  here.  The bank has fascinating 19th century origins in Aleppo, Syria.

And, for interest, 47 Barclay Square was once the home of William Pitt’s older brother (John Pitt, the 2nd Earl of Chatham). . William Pitt himself often stayed here. Full story  here.  William Pitt [1759 –1806] became Britain’s youngest Prime Minister at the age of 24.
